Current reading. Claims to tells us “what masked vigilantes, miraculous mutants and a sun god from Smallville can teach us about being human”. Really? Honestly, these subtitle writers really suck balls. I don’t understand why current publishing needs to mangle one of these for every nonfiction work that comes out these days.
The book itself, is, on the other hand, compulsively readable. By rights, I shouldn’t like this at all - one could accurately describe it as a connected series of fluent literature term papers: “There was a new confidence here: Comic book covers of the fifties had shown ordinary people running from symbolic monsters of the id. Now there were four people fighting back.” Yet I love it. Maybe that tells me something about myself.
What makes the book work for me is the fact that I, like everyone alive, love to escape and Grant Morrison plainly understands this: “I imagined a sentient paper universe and decided I would try to contact it.” Impressive, most impressive.
